How these numbers are computed

Percentile = rank ÷ number of researchers in the same Science-Metrix sub-field (#264 of 15,094 above). “Top 2%” therefore means the top 2% within that sub-field — not the top 2% of all researchers worldwide. The database also admits researchers with a top-100,000 composite score, whose sub-field percentile can be above 2%.

The six components (bar chart) are the six citation indicators that make up the composite score: total citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, and citations to sole-author / sole-or-first-author / sole-first-or-last-author papers. Each is log-transformed and divided by log(1 + the largest value of that indicator anywhere on the list) — one and the same constant for everyone on that list; the six bars add up to the composite score shown above. Self-citations are excluded throughout.

The curves plot the composite score of listed researchers, from highest to lowest. The left one covers only the 312 researchers listed from this sub-field; the right one covers all 236,313 researchers listed in the 2024 Single-year list — across all 174 sub-fields, not just this one. The composite score is normalised once per list, against the largest value in that list, so it can be compared across sub-fields. Each horizontal axis is the position within its own group (0 = highest score), and those two groups are very different in size: the sub-field percentile above is measured against all 15,094 researchers in this sub-field — including the vast majority who are not listed — whereas the left curve counts only the listed ones.

Paper count covers publications from 1960 to 2024 only (the window used by the source database), whereas citation counts and the h-index cover the researcher's whole Scopus profile. A small paper count next to a large h-index is therefore expected for scholars whose main work predates 1960.

Rank on the list (the lower of the two ranks above) is the position among all 236,313 researchers listed in the 2024 Single-year list — across all 174 sub-fields — ordered by the composite score excluding self-citations. It is a position within the published list, so it is a different quantity from the sub-field percentile above and from the rank in the country: those three use denominators of very different sizes.

Rank in Poland is the position among the listed researchers of that country in the same data version and list. The composite score is recalculated from scratch in every data version, so values are not comparable across years — only ranks and percentiles are.

Institution names come from each researcher's most recent highest-contribution Scopus affiliation and may be out of date.
